Alternative Provision & Buddy Scheme Stockton-on-Tees

Alternative Provision and The Buddy Scheme lakota Hub C.I.C. Stockton on Tees

A Different Approach to Learning at Lakota Hub C.I.C.

For some children and young people aged 16 and under, a traditional classroom simply isn’t the environment where they learn best. They may have struggled with attendance, confidence, engagement or other barriers that have made education feel difficult.

At Lakota Hub C.I.C. in Stockton-on-Tees, we believe a different approach can open new opportunities.

Our Alternative Provision provides a safe, supportive and flexible learning environment for children and young people who may find mainstream education challenging.

Every young person is different. That’s why each programme is shaped around the learner’s individual needs, interests and abilities.

Through smaller groups, practical activities and personalised support, young people have the time and space to settle, build trust and begin engaging with learning again.

Our qualified, experienced and passionate team takes the time to listen and get to know each young person. Positive relationships are at the heart of our approach, helping learners feel safe, respected and valued.

2. Building Confidence, Skills & Independence

Learning can happen in many different ways. Our Alternative Provision combines engaging activities with opportunities to develop valuable everyday and life skills.

We encourage communication, teamwork, independence, confidence and problem-solving, while giving young people opportunities to discover their interests and recognise their strengths.

We also understand that progress looks different for everyone. Taking part in an activity, completing a task, learning something new or simply feeling comfortable enough to join in can all be important achievements.

At Lakota, small steps matter. We recognise them, celebrate them and build upon them.

Starting somewhere new can feel daunting, particularly for a young person who has previously found education difficult.

Our Buddy Scheme provides a friendly and familiar point of support from the beginning. It helps young people settle into Lakota at their own pace, build relationships and feel that they belong.

Having someone alongside them during those important first steps can provide reassurance and help them gradually develop the confidence to become part of the wider Lakota community.

3. Our Buddy Scheme

Supporting a young person works best when the people around them work together.

At Lakota Hub C.I.C., we work closely with:

  • Local borough councils,

  • Schools & Teachers

  • SEND professionals

  • Social workers

  • Early Help and youth services

  • Support workers

  • Parents and carers.

By working in partnership and sharing appropriate information, we can better understand each learner's needs, provide more consistent support and work towards positive outcomes together.

Alternative Provision isn't about giving up on education. It is about finding a different way to help a young person engage, learn and progress.

For some young people, this may mean successfully returning to mainstream education. For others, it may mean developing the confidence, resilience and skills they need for their next stage of learning.
